Washing machine failures disrupt household routines immediately. A load interrupted mid-cycle, a locked door and a drum of stagnant water create both inconvenience and a difficult financial decision: repair or replace?
The 50% rule for repair decisions
When evaluating whether to repair or replace a washing machine, a common guideline is to compare the expected repair cost with the price of an equivalent replacement appliance. If the repair is more than half the replacement cost, or the appliance is already old, replacement may be more economical.
Preliminary: the five-step service wash
Many apparent failures are actually blockages or software issues that can be resolved without tools. Complete this checklist before assuming component failure:
1. Clear the pump filter
Locate the access flap at the bottom front of the machine. Place a towel and shallow tray beneath it to catch water. Unscrew the filter cap slowly, remove debris, rinse the filter and reinstall firmly.
2. Clean the door seal gasket
Pull back the rubber door seal to expose folds where water and detergent residue can accumulate. Wipe thoroughly with warm soapy water or white vinegar.
3. Deep-clean the detergent drawer
Remove the drawer completely using the central release tab. Soak in hot water and scrub away hardened detergent or residue. Wipe the drawer housing before reinserting.
4. Run a hot service wash
With the drum empty, use a suitable washing machine cleaner or descaler and run the hottest available maintenance cycle recommended by the manufacturer.
5. Check the drainage hose
Inspect the waste hose at the rear. Ensure it is not kinked, twisted or compressed against the wall.
Independent repair costs in the UK
Repair charges usually include a diagnostic call-out, labour and parts. Examples can include a replacement door seal, heating element, drain pump or drum bearing repair.
For premium brands under five years old, a moderate repair can make sense. For older budget models, a high repair cost may not be economical when replacement appliances are available with a new warranty.
